Mesquite Independent School District strives to infuse 21st century
skills throughout the district, integrating technology as a tool for
problem-solving and creativity.
MISD provides many technology resources, one of which is a Guest
Wireless Network (misd-wifi). Students in grades 9-12 and District
employees are allowed to bring their own devices with WiFi capability to
a campus or work site.
All users of the MISD GUEST NETWORK shall comply with the MISD
Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) and additional procedures outlined in this
document.
Accessing MISD Guest Network from Your Wireless Device
MISD provides Internet access points at no charge in selected areas for
guests with portable computers or devices capable of receiving wireless
signals (wireless devices). System users are able to access the
Internet from their wireless devices when positioned within range of an
access point. Guests are expected to use the wireless access in a legal
and responsible manner. By using this wireless access network, the user
acknowledges that he/she is subject to, and agrees to abide by all laws,
and all state and federal rules and regulations applicable to Internet
use as well as MISD
policies and guidelines.
Violation of school or district policies, local, state and/or federal
laws while using a personal electronic device on the MISD wireless
network will result in appropriate disciplinary and/or legal action as
specified in the Student Handbook and Code of Student Conduct, School
Board policy as well as by local, state and/or federal law.
Internet access is filtered by the District on personal devices in the same manner as District-owned equipment.
Terms and Conditions of Use
Guests who wish to access MISD’s guest network will need a mobile
device equipped with a wireless card that supports the MISD WiFi
standard.
Mobile devices include, but are not limited to, laptops, netbooks, tablets, iPads, iPod Touches, smartphones and eReaders.
These devices are the sole responsibility of the student owner.
The school or District assumes no responsibility for personal devices
if they are lost, loaned, damaged or stolen and only limited time or
resources will be spent trying to locate stolen or lost items. To
prevent loss, students should record the device serial number and
maintain that information at home. Devices and peripherals such as
cables or headphones should also be clearly labeled with the student’s
first and last names.
These devices have educational and monetary value. Students are
prohibited from trading or selling these items to other students on
District property, including school buses.
Each student is responsible for his/her own device: set-up, maintenance, and charging.
Teachers will not store student devices at any time, nor will any
District employee diagnose, repair, or work on a student’s personal
device.
Electronic devices are to be used in the classroom for
educational purposes only, and at the discretion of the classroom
teacher. When in use, devices must be on vibrate or silent mode
so that no audible tone is heard. A teacher or administrator may permit
the use of ear buds or other types of headphones.
Campus administrators and teachers have the right to prohibit use of
devices at certain times or during designated activities (e.g., campus
presentation, theatrical performance, or guest speaker) that occur
during the school day.
Teachers may take up a device if a student is causing a distraction, is
off task, or is using the device inappropriately, but may only hold it
until the end of the class period.
Staff & Student Agreements
When registering their devices on the MISD-WiFi network, students and staff must agree to the following statements.
Mesquite ISD is providing access to wifi and the opportunity for you to use a personal device for learning.
By registering your device, you accept the statements noted below.
Those who bring a personal device to school assume total responsibility
for the device. You must take all reasonable measures to protect
against theft or damage of your device.
The following measures are recommended as a means to protect your device:
-
Personal devices should have a label indicating the owner of the device.
-
Personal devices should never be left unattended.
-
Personal devices should not be left in view in an unattended vehicle.
-
Personal devices should never be shared between students.
Users accept that all MISD policies regarding the use of electronic
devices and the internet apply to personal devices connected to the
internet with MISD network.
Note: Students
You agree to follow the acceptable use policy and will be held responsible just as if you were using a school owned device.
Security Considerations
Wireless access is by nature an insecure medium. As with most guest
wireless networks, any information being sent or received over MISD
wireless network could potentially be intercepted by another wireless
user. Cautious and informed wireless users should not transmit their
credit card information, passwords and any other sensitive personal
information while using a wireless "hotspot.”
Users who access MISD’s wireless network are forewarned that there can
be no expectation of privacy when using he wireless network. Users
assume all associated risks and agree to hold harmless MISD and its
employees for any personal information (e.g., credit card) that is
compromised, or for any damage to the users' hardware or software due to
electric surges, security issues, damage caused by viruses or hacking,
or damages or loss sustained as a result of the user’s connection to or
access to MISD’s systems. All wireless access users should maintain
up-to-date virus protection on their personal laptop computers or
wireless devices, as well as staying up-to-date with applicable
Operating Systems security patches.
Disclaimer
MISD is providing wireless connectivity as a guest service and offers
no guarantees that any use of the wireless connection is in any way
secure, or that any privacy can be protected when using this wireless
connection. Use
of MISD’s wireless connection is entirely at the risk of the user, and
MISD is not responsible for any loss of any information that may arise
from the use of the wireless connection, or for any loss, injury, or
damages resulting from
the use of the wireless connection.
Students and staff who do not accept the terms of service will not be
able to access the MISD Guest Network. The terms of service prompt
listed above will post each time an outside user attempts to use this
network and a user
must agree to the terms as a condition of connection.
Access to the MISD Guest Network is a privilege and administrators and
faculty may examine a student’s personal device to review files and
messages to maintain system integrity and ensure that users are acting
responsibly.
